Pku Intro

Hi everybody,
I wanted to start this blog to reach out to all those with pku and all those who don’t know what it’s like to be a phenylketontric. Every person with pku understands the struggles and all the high emotion that comes with pku, but often times we like we’re alone. I want to share my pku life with all of you and hopefully make a difference in some of your lives.
In this blog I’ll tell you my crazy pku stories like when my levels are off (lord knows theres many of them). I’ll also post tips and things I’ve discovered to help with pku like weightloss. I’ll also post recipes and lifestyle tips to help your busy life. I’m so very excited for this oppurtunity to connect with all of you.
So for this very first blog post I want to share a pku baking story with all of you.  I was so excited to find a breadmaker that I can just throw all the ingredients in and let it do all the work. Little did I know just like everything else with pku I was going to run into a huge problem.
I was super enthused when I ordered my breadmaker and bread pan. It felt like Christmas had come early when I opened the package from amazon and found my breadmaker inside. I could hardly wait to try it out, but it would have to wait awhile, because I had a big psych exam I had to study for.
So finally three days later I got to try it out. I pulled out the Brooke’s Favorite Bread Recipe and followed the directions when using the breadmaker. I put in all the ingredients it said to first and stirred till it was mixed well. I then added the rest of the ingredients and turned on the machine. I could hear, see and smell the bread making. I was so excited thinking I can’t even bake normal non low pro baked goods, but apparently I’m good at this. Now relaxed and assured all was well I went in the living to study. I was sitting there reading chapter 11 on personality when I smelled something burning. I walked into the kitchen to find my brand new bread maker with smoking coming out everywhere. Scared to death I yelled for my grandmother. We both stood there pannicing, until we finally just pulled the plug out and lifted the lid. Our house still smells of unbaked bread dough and smoke.
What was worse was cleaning it the next day. The smell was that of something sour I’m guessing from the yeast and the dough instead of being thick and “dough like” was sticking and reminded me of the consistency of meriingue. I was so let down and my vision of being the martha stewart of pku had shattered.
Even now days later I have no clue what went wrong. One thing that can be said about all pku products is that you have no clue whether you’ll have freshly baked bread or a smoking breadmaker overrun with raw bread dough. It’s just an adventure.
